June 2000
Sign of the Month for June 2000 goes to Pat Neve of Signman, Inc. Melbourne, Florida. Beautiful Sandblasted Sign, Pat! I will let Pat tell you about this sign. Mark Fair . The Artist's Details.. This is such an honor for a working guy like me. Every now and then we get to have some fun around here. The shape and design of the sign was inspired by a sign in SignCraft magazine. The client and I went through a few old issues of the mag and that format caught his eye. I 'borrowed' the shape and worked with some old fashioned typestyles to achieve the look that you see. The sign is made from 15 lb HDU, masked then sandblasted. The flourishes are from Butler Gold Volume 1. We made the background color a deep burgandy with a dark green border. Old Florida is in a creamy beige we call "file folder beige". Ronan gold metallic paint finishes off the ribbon background and phone number. I originally wanted to gild the sign, but the client wouldn't go for the price. This company specializes in renovating homes into Florida Key West Style. I digitized from scratch the house in the graphic using SignLab 4.95. It was output using hp white vinyl over a painted black background. The roofs are done in mirrored finished vinyl that appear to be like the old tin roofs. I imagine that after time, the roofs will fade out and look more authentic. All of this is over an airbrushed faded panel. The sign was mounted with stainlees steel screws to a sealed 3/4" MDO plywood backing which was fastened to the posts. We don't like using tube adhesive in these types of signs because of the probable failure of the MDO. It will be easier in the future to seperate all of the pieces when the time comes for repainting/repairing. A little side note: Since I was foolish enough to design the sign while the client was here in my shop, he tells the people who ask him about the sign that HE designed it! It would be like me telling him that I wanted my house redesigned to look like the one in "Southern Living" and then telling my friends that I designed the house when it was complete! I have since let him know that I designed the sign. He just happened to be sitting behind me when I did! Pat Neve visit his web site... Signman, Inc. .
