The Artist's Details..
Say it ain't so, Mark! I wasn't trying to win anything...just wanted to
share the finished product with you. But thank you for the honor!
This 3' x 4' sign was made for a small condominium on the beach at Orange
Beach, Alabama. A hurricane had nearly destroyed the building a couple years
ago and they recently rebuilt and landscaped.
The only thing missing was a sign.
The condo has been called Sea Oats West for many years so I was locked into
the name. The sea oats illustration was pretty obvious since the beach in
this area is covered with sea oats. I ended up taking a Sharpie marker and
sketched the illustration black on white in about two minutes. I then
scanned it in Composer and colored it in using CorelDraw 8. The entire
layout was done in Corel. I then converted the drawing back to Composer and
sent it to the router. I had to be careful with the thin strokes of the
illustration because routing redwood can cause the wood to chip away small
pieces. So I outlined everything with a 1/16" bit and then moved up to a
1/8" bit and finally "hogged out" the background with a 3/16" bit. I beveled
the edges of both sides before finally cutting out the entire shape with a
1/4" bit. This process seemed to take forever but the results were very
crisp.
I lightly sandblasted the entire sign to bring out some of the grain and
sanded the raised areas. I sprayed two coats of oil based primer before
spraying the background with semi gloss acrylic paints for the fades. The
rest of the sign was brushed on with acrylic paint. The installation was a
snap, except for the fact that I had to drive from Houston, Texas to install
it. But it was the beginning of a much needed vacation. And damn, it's hot
in Alabama...100 degrees the day I installed it. Ouch!
Thanks again for the recognition, Mark. I look forward to Sign of the Month
every month and I'm honored to have been chosen this month. Lookin' forward
to our next Very Mini Dixie Letterheads meet!
