November 1999
Sign of the Month Award Winner for November 1999
Bob Parsons
Anchorage, Alaska
This fellow needs very little introduction.
I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Bob at the "Mazeppa Muster"
August 1999 in Mazeppa, Minnesota.
I have been a fan of Bob's work as a cartoonist in "SignCraft" Magazine
for many years now.
Along with being a super talented artist, Bob is also a great guy!
If this guy has an ego, it sure doesn't show.
Bob did not enter "Sign of the Month"
I took the liberty of swiping this great logo design from his website.
thanks Buddy!

The Artist's Comments...
Mark, you are now, without reservation, considered by me as certifiably nuts.
BUT I am really honored.
Here's the story.
Roscoe's restaurant was a hole in the wall place in an almost deserted part
of town. However, Roscoe was the national spokesman for Lowery Seasonings,
so he had noteriety and a loyal following. Then his place burned down. Some
flolks I work with who manage a popular mall in town wanted to do something
for Roscoe and relocate him to the mall. It had to be hand done. It had to
be warm. They came to the right guy.
I did the script quickly using a pencil trying to get the feel of a
signature. After all it is Roscoe's name. After I was happy with the
script, it was just a matter of throwing some other stuff together to
compliment the feel, and to incorporate the accompanying copy. I wish I
knew Dennis Garrity back then when the signs were done.
They all had to look old.
A real funny thing happened to me doing this job. I lettered the wall
outside the restaurant, which was a horizontal flush pine siding. (the
restaurant is inside). Well I mispelled cobbler and had to sand off the
lettering and restain the pine and reletter. During the sanding stage, I
needed a new belt sander, one that had a vacuum, as I was working inside a
mall and couldnt spread dust all over. I was on a ladder and had the
trigger on the sander cocked in the constant mode when I yanked the cord
too hard and it unplugged from the extension cord. I set the belt sander
(now about five minutes old) on top of my 10' step ladder and got down and
plugged her in again. Do you know how far a belt sander will travel off a
10' step ladder? About 15'! Geez I was embarrased. When that power came on
I just had time to turn my head and see the old Craftsman go sailing off
down the mall. And people wonder how I get my ideas!
Take Care Mark
