March 2000 The Sign of the Month for March goes to Chuck Berg, Montgomery, Alabama When I first moved to Montgomery in 1976, One of the first things i noticed was some sign artist was doing some beautiful work here on Fire Trucks. I later had the good fortune of meeting this guy and he turned out to be none other than Chuck Berg. Chuck and I went on to become good friends. Chuck specializes in Gold Leaf, and Fire Apparatus Lettering. Thanks Chuck for all the years of inspriration and friendship. Mark Fair . The Artist's Details.. Thanks Mark for the honor! "I did this fireman's axe a few years ago. The axe handle was hand carved with flowers and designs by a furniture craftsman. The pickhead, found in a junk pile of discarded fire department parts in 1943, was cleaned and chrome plated locally." "The tip of the blade is wider than today's axe heads." "The plaque was crafted to hold the axe in the desired position with with easy access by way of removable dowels." "Scroll work was done using varigated leaf and outlined in engine turned 14 k white gold." "A mixed orange is used for striping and enhanced with gray."
