July 1999

The Sign of the Month for July 1999 is awarded to Dan Sawatzky and his company,
The Imagination Corporation.
I first noticed Dan's great work in the November / December 1996 issue of SignCraft magazine.
He wrote an article entitled "How we paint a mural"
A photo of him and his son Peter was featured on the cover.

The Artist's comments...
You asked me to submit a sign for consideration in your sign of the month club. Well as you know our work is not
exactly usual in the normal sense. Signs by definition are a means to convey a message to the potential customer in
a memorable way. Signs should be unified with the storefront and even taken into the place of business in a similar
style. This is what we do, only in a very visual way.
We got such a chance with this store. The store was "Millennium" in a new mall in Burnaby, British Columbia,
Canada. I was given carte blanche to go wild with the store. My only direction was to include a dragon theme in a
gothic style. Even though I was booked solid this was too good to turn down.
The basic design was done over a weekend as the owner was in town from Hawaii for only three days. From these
sketches final drawings were done as artist renderings. This gave us the freedom to interpret the design somewhat
as we went. It proved to be a difficult job as we did the prefab in Edmonton, the consulting architect was in
Calgary (300 miles away), the job was in Vancouver (1000 miles away) and the owner was in Hawaii. But I had a
wonderful team to assist me and it came off great. It is constructed of fiberglass reinforced concrete over a welded
steel frame. All finishes are of acrylic paint and are handbrushed with fitches. The theme covers the entire store
inside and out and yet the merchandising space was not compromised in the process. Words on this signage are
kept to a minimum but the store stops traffic dead in its tracks and the owner reports great business.
Thanks for selecting our work for your Sign of the Month!
I passed around the word yesterday to the gang and everybody is real proud!
thanks on behalf of the whole crew! these projects are a real team effort and the end
product shows the pride we all take in our work.
Thanks again for the honor! and thanks for doing the work involved in hosting this award each month.
