January 2000 The Sign of the Month for the new millennium is awarded to Terry Teague of James River Signs, Galena, Missouri. "This photo does not do justice to this skillfully hand painted panel" "I am very proud to say i own this beautiful letterhead project" "Watching Terry letter this one made me want to break my quills and throw them in the trash! HeeHeeHee!" a footnote: notice the small convex triangle at the bottom, Terry said he put it on the sign in honor of Dan Antonelli, April 1999 winner of Sign of the Month. ;) Mark Fair . The Artist's Details... Hey what do ya know, I win the coveted sign of the month award! I'm knocked out, I never win anything! Mark is a great guy and was a wonderful host along with his wife Susan, whom I might add is much better looking than Mark. This was one interesting meet in that most of the people there were there because of the Bullboard. What a treat to put faces with names and meet all those great people from the south. Mark wants me to describe this panel and how it came about and since I can't find my picture of it I'll have to do it from memory........ In the first place Mark's shop is a great one-man shop but when you put fifty people in it finding a place to do anything is a challenge, finally I located a bulletin board in his office about the right height to letter on if I wanted to work vertically and standing up.......werks for me as Monty would say. Next what to work on?.......Scrounged around Mark's shop and eventually found a piece of aluminum under the easel.......covered with dust........had to peel the backing to find that it was yellow, lol. Don't know about you guys but yellow isn't one of my favorite colors to work on.......this is when I decided to do the pearlescense (is that spelled right?) striped background. Using tape I divided the bkg. into stripes and mixed yellow pearl with a small amount of drk magenta pearl. Using the backing film wadded up and palleted into the paint I tapped in the bkg. forming the textured stripes. While this dried I begun work on the pattern. Let me stop here for a moment to say that Mark had already threatened numerous times to steal the panel I had brought with me so making him a panel to appease the greedy side of his nature was becoming a must do! hehehe!............Anyway I made a thumbnail sketch and then a full sized pattern that gave me the bones of the layout......transferred this to the panel and proceeded to paint all the background colors. By now it was into the afternoon and I decided to take the panel back to the room with me and place it in front of the heater to dry while I took a nap. Two hours later it was dry and I was refreshed......back to the meet where I worked and chatted with everyone until Bob was to tired to stay awake any longer. Back the next morning where I was able to finish before most people arrived. This panel was done entirely by brush from a pattern drawn by hand! Not computer aided in any way, but nothing done at this meet used the computer as a tool and I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see people at a meet with all different levels of skill using traditional methods to create work with some real feeling. I had a wonderful time and it makes me very proud to have been chosen for this award. Also Mark wanted me to tell all you fine people what a wonderful person he was and how meeting him has changed my life forever. hehehe! but ya know what it probably has.....Mark and I are as good of friends now as if we had grown up in the same holler.
