February 1999
The February Sign of the Month goes to my good friend
and fellow Sign Artist, Mark Jordan.
Mark's work has inspired me for years. His love for the art is only exceeded by his talent.
Below is a description of the sign by the artist.
.
"This 3' x 4' double-sided sign was handpainted with bulletin enamels on an aluminum
panel. The aluminum was primed and painted black with automotive enamels.
The sky and foreground were painted first using every trick I knew at the
time...airbrush, brush, spattering, scumbling, fingerpainting. The dog began
as a black sillhouette. Then I worked from black to the gray values and then
to white. I made the mistake the first time around of trying to paint the
middle values first and then work to black and then to white. It was an
instant failure. So, I blocked in the sillhouette black and worked it all the
way to white and it seemed to work. This sign hangs on an ornamental iron
pole and bracket in the artsy section of Houston, Texas. Although I live in
Alabama now, they say the sign is holding up quite well after several years of
exposure. I wish all the signs I made now were as much fun as this one. My
thanks to my good friend Mark Fair for the recognition."
