August 1999 The Sign of the Month for August 1999 is awarded to Rick Sacks Rick sent this beautiful signage to me to feature as Sign of the Month. Great work Rick, thanks for sharing a classic... Mark Fair . a detail by the sign artist... This company had an illustration on the cover of their catalogue, and we mentioned turning it into a relief carving and sold the job. As it was developing, and we realized that it was all going to be painted, we decided rather than carving to try casting. We made our mold from oil clay. Made a rubber mold. Cast the images from resin. Painted them. Meanwhile....on the sign part... we glued up the 2x12's, cut the shape, made the moldings, blasted the background, painted it. Then we applied the painted castings and the cut out stars, and the cut out letters. We convexed the letters, and primed, painted sized and gilded. The stars we gilded after using an Instacol size, because we wanted that extra bright gild on them. We made up the bracket, and some shims and spacers and wedges for the installation. Old buildings are seldom plumb, and require lotsa tricks during installs. This sign weighed around 300 lbs. We set up a scaffold for the install. At one point while holding up the sign white attempting to get a couple bolts in, it was getting rather heavy and we could use some more help. Suddenly there was a voice calling up "Rick, can you use another hand?" and up climbed our chief building inspector who helped with the install. Thank you Jim Spence. Rick Sacks . Past Winners .
