Mark has had a love of music since his childhood days growing up in Gordo, Alabama

Mark's folks bought his first guitar at the age of 9.It was a "GIBSON", it came from Gibson's Discount Center in Tuscaloosa and cost $12.95, tiger stripes included."My "Gibson" had Black Diamond Strings on it and would turn my fingers green when I played it.""I thought it to be the best thing since sliced bread. " Mark started writing poetry in junior high school.Then he heard a song on the radio one summer,

"I think this is what really inspired me to learn the guitar and try to write my own compositions."A few years after high school Mark and a friend Billy Cargile started a band called "Mellow Feel.""We played in bars and coffee houses at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama." Friend and "Musicologist" Rick Wright exposed Mark to such music as,
Jackson Browne, Jerry Jeff Walker, Little Feat and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

Around 1976 Mark moved to Montgomery, Alabama and started playing in a band called "Grace."Steve Maness on mandolin, Danny Raines on bass, Steve Garst on banjo and guitar.Mark also met his wife Susan through music.Mark and Susan played in a band called "Crossover""Susan is a great singer and artist and is the inspiration for a lot of my writing.

"While playing as a single act at the BrierField Bluegrass Festival in Montevallo, Alabama, Mark had the good fortune of meeting John Starling, lead singer in the famous bluegrass band, the Seldom Scene Through John Starling, Mark met songwriter and publisher Paul Craft.

Paul's songs include,
"Midnight Flyer" recorded by the Eagles, "Keep me from Blowin away" recorded
by Linda Ronstadt and "Blue Heartache" by Gail Davies.Through Paul Craft, Mark had some success with a song he co-wrote with Claire Lynch called "Hills of Alabam'".
Kathy Mattea recorded it on her "Willow in the Wind" Album in 1989.The song was published by Paul Craft Music, Nashville.
